Join Tony at the Katsu Sushi Japanese Restaurant, 572 Danforth Ave at Carlaw (near Pape subway station). It has a wide menu of Japanese specialties including sushi, sashimi, teriyaki and tempura dishes. Vegetarian options and an all-you-can-eat buffet- by-order are also available. Join Ed for great New Orleans jazz played by The Happy Pals, a top Toronto Dixieland jazz band. The band doesn't start until 4.30 but it's more likely we can sit together if we're there by 4.00. There’s no cover charge, just the UKC levy. At 7.00 we plan to walk across the street to The Red Lounge, 444 Spadina, which serves good, reasonably priced, western and Asian food. UK CONNEXION GOLF TOURNAMENT
1000 Jane Street at Jane/Eglinton
Join Dorothy and Joan at Scarlett Woods executive golf course for 18 holes of golf. You don’t have to be an expert. All welcome! Bring your single friends! We will be playing ‘BEST DRIVE’, meaning that for the drive only, on holes greater than 150 yards; players pick up their balls and place them in line with the ball of the player who has the best drive. There will be prizes for ‘CLOSEST TO THE HOLE’ and ‘LONGEST DRIVE’ at designated holes. There is a maximum of one prize per golfer. Cost: green fees of $30 for seniors and $45 for adults, plus $5 UKC levy. Rentals available: clubs $20, pull cart $5 and power carts $30 for seniors, $32 for adults. Power carts can be shared. DINNER AT THE WILD GOOSE
On the border of Mississauga/Etobicoke
Everyone is welcome and since NO reservations are needed, just show up; UKC levy of $5 will apply. This will be the ’19th hole’ for many of the afternoon golfers, with no levy payable. The WILD GOOSE Bar & Grill is located at 5395 Eglinton Ave. W, just west of Renforth Drive. From Scarlett Woods golf course, go west on Eglinton and about 10 minutes later just after passing the lights at Renforth, you will see the restaurant in the plaza on the south (left side). HIKE IN HIGH PARK
High Park
Join Dorothy and Joan for a brisk walk at High Park. Meet at the north entrance of High Park on Bloor Street West at High Park Avenue, a 2 minute walk from the High Park subway station. Please arrive promptly. For those coming by car, allow time for parking and meet at 10:20 in front of the Grenadier Cafe, where the large parking lot (free parking) is located. We will hike through various sections of High Park for about 1 1/2 + hours. Then have lunch at Grenadier Cafe on the back patio. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water, sun screen, and a hat. The $5 UKC levy applies. If planning to do this walk, please book with either Joan or Dorothy by 6 pm on the Sat before. Located directly across from Roy Thomson Hall - just steps from St. Andrew subway. For GO train users it is a relaxing 10 minute walk from Union Station and parking is free at GO stations. Join Chris at the Old Spaghetti Factory, a top dining experience in Toronto for decades, housed in a charming historical building that was a blacksmith's shop at the turn of the century, Just one block east of the old Hummingbird/ Sony Center. Mingling starts at 6 pm in the bar, dinner at 7 pm. Several popular Italian specialties are offered with prices ranging from approx. $13 to $20. Book Club
BOOK CLUB MEETING
Central Etobicoke
Are you excited about reading? Do you like to discuss the books you have read? Join Joan and Dorothy for a book club meeting at Dorothy's home to discuss that month's chosen book over tea, coffee, or water. If you wish, bring a list of titles/authors of books that you have enjoyed or want to read in the future. Research has shown that both reading and socializing play an important role in maintaining mental health. For this book club meeting, please read beforehand the book, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon. Mirvish Theatre is presenting the National Theatre's acclaimed production of this book, at the Princess of Wales theatre in Toronto in October and November 2017. The Toronto Public Library has many copies of this book, some large print copies and are available. Dorothy's address will be given when members register for this event. You must be a member to attend this event. Some free parking available. TTC bus service close by. Cost is just the $5 UKC levy. Reserve early as there will be a limited numbers of participants. Please join Mary in the lobby at 1:15 pm when the box office opens. The play starts at 2 pm and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis (Adults $24/Seniors $20, plus $5 levy). The play, Theft, is a comedy by British playwright, Eric Chappell and should be a good one! Caught in the act at a posh country home, a burglar takes invasion of privacy to a whole new, hilarious level. A tongue-in- cheek delight, packed with stinging one-liners. Location 2190E Bloor St W (downstairs on the north side) across the street from No Frills, just east of Runnymede subway. There is street parking on Bloor and side streets. A municipal Parking lot is located behind the theatre. Sunday matinees sell out very fast. Join Ed at The Leaside Pub, 190 Laird Drive, three blocks south of Eglinton (56 bus). Enjoy live jazz with good company and a wide selection of food and drinks. There’s no cover charge, just the UKC levy. In order for Ed to make reservations, please register by 6.00 pm on the Thursday before by calling 905-820-5145 or emailing edthurygill@sympatico.ca. It’s recommended that emails include a contact phone number in case of last-minute changes. The band doesn’t start until 4.00 but there’s some uncertainty about being able to make reservations so it’s best to be there by 3.45 in order to sit together. Being earlier is even better.
